Ray Hulett House

Ray Hulett House is one of many old age homes that are well run by TAFTA on very tight budgets. Many of the pensioners who live in these homes have no income above a State pension and this barely covers the cost of their rent and two meals a day on working days only (ie. not on weekends and public holidays). In addition, many of the people living in Ray Hulett House do not have family and friends caring for them. We always get a warm and friendly reception form the residents although there is great scolding if we are late.

In 2001, one of the member's prayer groups organised a tea and a Christmas play for the residents that went down very well.

Bread

Every day, the bakeries around Durban discard damaged bread that cannot be sold (for example, some loaves get confused and go through the slicer longways). Albany Bakery has generously allowed us to collect damaged bread for distribution. Some is used for Ray Hulett House and some is distributed amongst people looking for work on the side of the road. When you see how appreciative people are of even badly squashed loaves of bread, you understand how great their basic needs must be.

As the residents of Ray Hulett House prefer brown bread and the job seekers prefer white bread, often everyone gets what they want.
