The parish offers catechetical instruction for 6 to 18 year olds. All children of the parish are
encouraged to attend these classes provided by the parish. Catechism takes place on a weekly basis
during school term time. Classes are held in the homes of teachers or parishioners. We call this
Home Catechetics.
HOME CATECHETICS takes catechetical instruction and formation out of the formal, classroom-type
situation into the information home environment. The advantages of this system are:
- It enables us to increase the number of classes per standard (not
possible in the past because of limited teaching space)
- There is a reduced number of pupils per class/standard creating
an atmosphere for effective instruction and individual attention. There is a maximum
of either pupils per class.
- It allows opportunity for the catechist to enter into a personal
relationship with the individuals in the class, creating a warm, more effective, inviting
and accepting environment for the sharing of faith, spiritual formation and the teaching
of Gospel values.
- It gives the parents a greater variety in the choice of days for the child's catechetical
instruction so avoiding clashes with extra-curricular and after school activities.
- The HOME CATECHETICS environment enables the child to form a healthy attitude
towards their faith by enabling them to relate their experience of faith and the Gospel
message to their lived experience of life, particularly in their homes.
Parents are encouraged to see these classes as a programme of on-going formation for their children
and not simply as a means to receive sacraments.
The parish catechetical co-ordinators, Anne Chatteris and Veronica Donnelly (donnelly@iafrica.com) will provide further information, advice and details.
